Stop advance on click

I'm backed into a corner trying to use PowerPoint for a presentation with
navigation.

The navigation is in place (and I'm praying nobody wants to add or remove a
slide).

However, if somebody clicks anywhere other than a hyperlink, they simply
advance to the next slide and break the logic of the attempted navigation.

So: Any suggestions?

Can I stop the "on click go to next slide" behavior that is built-in?

Go to the Slide Show menu and choose Set Up Show. Check Browsed at a
Kiosk.
