Stop 0x000000ED WXP Pro SP1 Dell Latitude D600

Was working fine, no h/w or s/w changes, antivirus up to date etc.

Now BSOD Stop 0x000000ED (0x867de900,0xc0000102,0,0) UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Done everything in MS KB, makes no difference. Booted with Linux CD and
BartPE CD, both have no trouble accessing anything on the disk. CHKDSK
reports no errors. Norton AV reports no problems. Partition Magic says
everything is fine. WinHex shows Boot sector, MBR etc OK.

Any suggestions appreciated!! Can use the system by booting with BartPE and
accessing data etc, but can't run most of the programs and I don't want to
trash and rebuild - would really like to get to the cause.

Thanks in advance

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

Hi Will

Thanks for that info - I have already followed all the steps in both links,
and various others. The Dell notebook has been running without fault for
about 1 year so the second option - incorrect cable - seems unlikely. Also,
just in case, I removed the drive from the bay, then the disk from the
cradle and cleaned with compressed air and reseated - still no go!!

Also, no driver overlay used and I used the Dell diagnostics running
non-stop for 24 hours to stress test all components - nothing in error -
sigh.
