Having upgraded my system to 64 bit i decided to buy and install Windows
Vista.

Sys Model: M2NSLI
BIOS:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
L1 Data Cache: 64Kb
L1 Inst Cache: 64Kb
L2 Cache: 1024Kb
Family Model: S
MMX: Yes
E MMX 3DNow: Yes Extended 3DNc
Mem: 2048MB RAM

Apart from the problems of software compatibility ie. Much of the
software I use will not run on it and the blurry fonts even with anti
alias off it's been reasonably stable. Currently I wish I had bought
64bit XP as the problems, limitations and 'auto' features in Vista are
very irritating and hard to turn off. A few days ago I decided to
increase the size of the partition containing Vista, since then it has
refused to boot up at all, either to normal or safe mode. The boot
process begins then a blue screen is displayed with the following text:

'If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart
your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer, remove any newly installed hard
drives or
hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured, and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive
corruption,
and the restart your computer.

I have run an up to date virus checker over the partition, rebuilt the
partition table, reinstalled the MBR, de fragmented the entire disk, run
DSKCHK /F, tried the rescue from the CD, tried re-installing drivers,
searched the knowledge base and many community forums, all without
locating a solution.

So the obvious question is - what did you use/how did you resize the active
installed partition.

our friends at GOOGLE list numerous entries on this problem.

general thought seems to be boot sector virus.

check some of them out.

Partition was resized with Paragon Partition Manager 9.0, i then ran
Partition Table Doctor 3.5 to check the partition table and make a backup.

Already searched Google, MS knowledge base and a variety of forums.
Problems listed for Vista which resulted in this error are related to
first install, failure (by the user) to install hard drive/raid drivers,
change of hardware or having the SATA bios set wrongly. As Vista
installed and has been running fine until now don't think it's that.
Also the error does not include 'INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE' as per other
articles.

Are there any boot sector viruses which will survive an up to date virus
scan and re-installation of the mbr?

Hmmm, well, 7B is a boot volume issue, does event viewer
show volume errors? Can you chkdsk from dos?

According to their own web site http://www.ptdd.com/index.htm
Partition Doctor 3.5 is not designed for Vista (at least it is not listed as
a supported platform).
So have you damaged the partition table using unsupported software ?
Contact the manufacturer of Partition Doctor 3.5 for support of their
products on Windows Vista.

Not sure how to access Vista event viewer from XP. As per OP have run
chkdsk /F. System is multi boot has been since day one of vista install,
i'm typing this via XP on D: partition of the same drive where vista
resides. C: partition contains Vista and boot.ini ntldr files to boot
XP. Could it be something to do with whatever differences there are
between the NTFS file system used by Vista and previous NTFS (XP)
versions? System also boots linux but the /boot partition is on another
drive probably not valid but thought i'd make sure all information is
provided. All OS's have resided together happily until now. :(

Ah yes valid point, should have mentioned both programs were used under
XP, didn't fancy resizing a disk while it was running an OS. :)

So is this a dual boot machine or something else ??
Where did XP come from?
(The whole story helps up front if you want any real help)

Just to keep you guys posted, i have submitted a support request to both
Paragon and Easus.

Sorry, the machine is triple boot Vista, XP, Linux (CentOS) all happy
until i altered the Vista partition size, now XP and liunx are fine but
Vista won't boot as per OP. Vista and XP reside on a 250g SATA drive
Vista on C: (primary partition, was 20gb now 32gb) and XP on D: (first
extended partition, was 15gb now 20gb). The linux /boot partition is on
a different drive but /, /usr and /home are 10gb partitions on the 250g
SATA drive after some other data partitions, though i don't think that's
relevant to the problem.

Erm can't think of anything that might be relevant. :) Added the new
hardware around Xmas time (MB,CPU, GFX card, mem, SATA HD), installed
Vista found it would not run a lot of my software so installed XP, yes i
know the hard way to do it, but didn't expect to need XP. Sorted the
boot menu issue with Vista despite (rather then with) the aid of MS
knowledge base as the info there was/is wrong, installed CentOS. All was
well until i changed the partition sizes.

Not sure it could be defined as weird to have multiple OS's though. :)
Just ordered Fedora Core 9 as i'm not happy with CentOS so may soon have
4 OS's :) at least until/if i remove CentOS. Though that's an entirely
different issue down to the CentOS mirrors having errors which have been
there for almost a week, for an enterprise distro unacceptable.

Thanx for all the posts ppl, does anyone have any other suggests? If
this can't be fixed i'll probably bin Vista don't think it can be sold
on unfortunately. Think i should have bought XP64 but can't justify
buying both. :(
