still no SP1

ok, i tried on the 18th to install SP1, but it wouldn't install.

the list of probable reasons given many times on this group applied to
me in 2 areas:
1. my CL Audigy sound card contained an offending driver
2. My logitech camera had an offending driver

having checked on tech support with logitech, the driver was on the
system, but not being used... it was just in one of the install
folders. so i deleted it.
i uninstalled and removed my sound card.

rebooted and checked for updates and STILL found nothing....
Not sure if i'll have to go and get SP1, but I don't want to go
through another 2 hour process to have it fail on me again.

those were the only two things that applied to my system in the main
reasons given why it might not install.

the specific error code on the failed install listed something about
permissions. I went through the presribed remedy on that as well and
it should be fixed now.

Shouldn't SP1 show on the list of updates by now?
or will i need to download the thing separately?

You mean to say that you downloaded SP1, and when you couldn't get it to
install, you threw it away?

I could never get it to show up in Windows Update, either. So, once I'd
done everything I could think of to put my driver situation in order, I
downloaded SP1 and installed it and everything went just fine.

OK, that's more the question i guess... i was hoping i had made myself
clear enough.
what i had been looking for was for SP 1 to show up in windows update,
thereby kind of verifying that my driver situation was in order.

I didn't want to waste another 2 hours trying to install it only to
have it fail on me, but perhaps it simply isn't going to show up in WU
and my system will actually accept it this time.
did your installation fail at all, or did you just try up front to
make sure all the drivers were up to date [which I did as well, but i
hadn't noticed the list of problematic drivers] before you downloaded
it?

well, it failed again....
i've uninstalled all the supposed offending drivers and still it won't
install.

Shoot. Sorry to hear that.

In my case, I replaced a version of Sigmatel audio driver that was
listed as problematical, and looked into all other possibilities I could
find for SP1 not showing up in Windows Update, before finally going
ahead and trying the manual update, which, as I said, went fine without
any problems at all, despite it having never been offered by Windows
Update. All this proves is that one can successfully install SP1
manually without it ever being offered to you via Windows Update.

In your case, unfortunately, there is apparently still some problem to
be resolved, and I'm afraid that I can't guess what it might be. It
sounds like you've been looking into it pretty thoroughly.

Oh, Yuck! Before these major installs, I always do a Complete PC Backup
just in case of such an eventuality . . . Good luck. Hope you get it
sorted out.

So far, the automatic update of SP1 hasn't happened, and I'm waiting until
then. I suspect there may be a reason why MS is waiting to add it to the
automatic list....

I had a sound card driver problem at first, too. Even tho I updated the
driver, the old driver files were still hanging around. Had to delete (or
rename) them from Windows\System32\drivers before WU would offer SP1. Also
had to update my BIOS...have you checked that? Even then, it took a day or
two before SP1 showed up in WU. In other words, it wasn't immediately.

i hadn't thought about checking that manually to see if they were
there.. though i did with the logitech camera drivers.
the tech on the logitech forum seemed to think it strange that the SP
would be checking folders that didn't concern it for driver versions
that weren't in use, but i deleted them anyway.

since i did an uninstall for my sound card drivers, i had assumed that
they were removed from my system, BUT.....
i didn't manually check in the folder to see if they were gone or not.

haven't updated the BIOS in a long time, i'm not even sure there are
any bios updates for my motherboard which is about 8 years old now,
but i'll check.

oh and the internet connection did come back, but i had to reset the
modem and then reboot.

ok, perhaps, we've gotten somewhere. i chased down the error i got:
0x80070005
and someone mentioned on another forum that they were told to check a
windows module installer service.
i did and mine was set to manual and turned off. so running it as an
admin, i turned it on and set it to automatic.

i also removed the sound card driver that HAD been left over in the
system folder even after i supposedly deleted it.

then when i rebooted, windows update recommended the service pack at a
66 meg install rather than the 434 meg one as a standalone.
it's installing now, so we'll see how it goes and what kind of issues
it has after, but i'm cautiously optimistic right now...

now reverting back.

Don't give up! You'll probably keep seeing SP1 offered in WU until you
*are* successful. Did you find a BIOS update for your machine? My machine
(a laptop) is only 4 months old, yet there was a BIOS update for it. Are we
talking about a desktop, or laptop? Are you un-plugging all
peripherals...printers, scanners, 2nd monitors, USB devices, etc.? Chkdsk
and Defragging hard drive? Turning off Anti-virus, spyware/malware
scanners, firewall? Any one, or several of these could get in the way...try
everything...and good luck!
