SP1 at Microsoft Update

A

Art

I'm running Vista Home Premium, up-to-date, with no hidden updates; I've
got scads of room on my drive; and I'm in Canada ...if that matters.

I have read that Microsoft will be pushing out SP1 in April, but that if
one wished to get it earlier you could go to Microsoft Update. I've
tried this, but SP1 is not listed and my Windows is shown to be up-to-
date.

I've gone through all the reasons why SP1 might not be listed (installed
already; problem drivers; beta install of SP1; etc) but none of those
conditions seem to apply.

So... why can't I get SP1?

Thanks.

It's not on Windows Update. Get it off of Microsoft's site directly.
That's what I did.

Thanks for the replies.

I've read elsewhere that the MS Update route (rather than full download)
is the way to go, but if SP1 doesn't show up on MS Update fairly soon,
I'll go for the standalone version, as you suggested.

I downloaded it from the update site 3 or 4 days ago. I just did a "check
for updates" and it was there..

I've tried 'Check for updates', but SP1 still doesn't show up. Somebody
else said they changed their update settings to 'download, then ask',
but that didn't make any difference either. And I have double checked
all the eight reasons given in the KB article why SP1 might not be
offered, and none of them apply.

It's a mystery! (Maybe I just have to wait for the push.)

Art,

I downloaded from Microsoft's web site and installed SP1 with no problems.
I couldn't get it from WIndows Update either.

There have been some driver problems and, from what I understand, Microsoft
have changed Windows Update so that if our machine has drivers that have
problems with SP1 you will not get the update offered at the moment. As soon
as the problems have been rectified you will be offered the download.
However, if in doubt check out these two links:

Would suggest waiting for WU offered version of the SP1 update since the file
will be much smaller than standalone version which can be 400-700mb. Updated
to Vista SP1 from WU this weekend and file size was only 70mb but I
regularly, daily, run WU and keep up to date with all security and other
patches for Vista. Do you have the prerequisite updates, e.g., 937287,
938371, 941229 installed? May be why you are not offered SP1 if these have
not already been updated. Good luck.
