SP1 or not?

I do not recall if I ever actually updated my Vista laptop to SP1 or
not. So I'm currently trying to via Windows Update, which I haven't
used since April, and it's not showing up. I also cannot find SP1
listed in either the list of updates I've hidden nor those I've already
installed.

The System control panel tells me that I'm using the 32bit version of
Vista Ultimate, but it does not tell me that it's SP1.

Circumstantial evidence indicates that I have not installed the update.
But if I have not, shouldn't it show up in Windows Update as a critical
update?

Certain of the updates listed would probably be required before the SP1
update would show up. Also there are certain drivers which cause SP1 not to
show up.
Do all critical updates first, then important and if it still doesn't show
up check back and we will give you a link to the driver problem page.

Unless previous critical updates have been done, and hw drivers are sp1
compatible, then any attempt to jump to sp1 would probably lead to
heartache.
And as to why critical updates havent been previously installed, well say no
more, unless the PC hasnt been used & connected

I'd just like to add my voice to the others to confirm that if some/any of
the device drivers in your system are not SP1 ready then Windows Update will
decide not to show you the upgrade. It took a few months for my Gateway
laptop to be ready, the sound driver I think was the issue, and maybe also
the wireless device driver. When finally those drivers were updated by the
mfr, the SP1 update was offered.

I'd have to agree with the other voices, if it is not offered through
Windows Update I would not try it on your own. The probability that some
devices won't work properly will cause you to regret your decision. You
won't "notice" any huge improvements after you eventually get updated
anyway.

And, yes, once SP1 is installed you will have the SP1 notification stated on
the Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System page.

The machine shipped with Vista Home Premium as a brand new install, not
an upgrade. It was subsequently updated to Ultimate.

NOW SP1 is showing up. All critical udpates were applied, many of the
"recommended" ones as well, even ones I don't need and still no joy. I
had to install some OPTIONAL updates, specifically for a third-party
Bluetooth USB dongle (this laptop does not have BT built-in), the WiFi
radio and the audio device.

In the past, the update for the audio device would not install.

It's used occasionally. As to why no updates in so long, "if it ain't
broke, don't fix it". 90% of the updates, even the ones labeled as
"critical" do not effect me. I don't use Outlook for email, I don't
use Windows Live Mail, it's not a server, it's not a media center, it's
not a gaming platform, etc, etc.

I had long ago climbed off of the "must always update software" wagon a
long time ago, particularly when it comes to and because of updates
from Microsoft.
