Cannot update Conexant driver

J

Jeffrey Kaplan

I've been trying for weeks to update this thing via Windows Update in
order to be able to make sure I can install SP1. Every time I try it
fails with an error code 80070005. The Help link wasn't very helpful.
I tried searching the Microsoft download site to download and install
the update manually, and came up empty. What now?

Try the hardware manufacturers web site for the updated driver.

Personally, I'd never trust MS to update my drivers.

Download and install the driver from the manufacturer's support site.
Generally, this is better than using Windows Update, the most recent drivers
are usually available from manufacturer support sites long before WU.

Why are you trying to update the driver? Are you having a problem?

Perhaps it's one of those drivers that must be updated before SP1 can be
installed.

You do realize that SP1 is designed to fail, if it detects incompatible
drivers, right?

Don't doubt it, there are cases where drivers have to be updated before SP1
can be installed.

I doubt it.

In any event, driver updates should be installed from the OEMs website or
the hardware mfgs website, not via Windows updates.

Believe it or not, they don't have the specific driver I need. They
only seem to have generic drivers. They have links to the various OEM
companies they sell to. Going to the one for my computer (Compaq/HP) I
can only find the same version of the driver that I already have, which
is one of the "or earlier" versions of the driver which Microsoft has
deemed incompatible with SP1.

Perhaps you need to read the first sentence of my question again:

I just spent an hour on the phone with tech HP tech support trying to
resolve this. Their tech had me download and try three different newer
versions of the driver software that you have to know about to find
(ie, not listed on their site), and all three failed with the same
error about not being able to locate the device for the software. Tech
had me uninstall the driver from the device manager and try it, same
error.

On reboot, Windows automatically installed a generic HD Audio driver so
I tried Windowsudpate again, and it still failed, with the same error
message it's been giving me all along.

I have ignored Conexant driver updates via WU and have still been

not have been offered SP1.

I also have a problem with SP1 and a Conexant driver. I'm using the
56FW92 PCI modem for faxing. SP1 crashes at boot up with the old
driver. I've done a Google search and tried two different drivers with
no success. I now have another driver from Conexant but haven't tried
it yet. To stay operational at the moment I disable the driver in
Device Manager. If you feel ambitious, try this.

And more again: After leaving it be for another day, WindowsUpdate
offered me SP1. My previously downloaded full-package installer
failed, but after rebooting and closing the Sidebar, and other
utilities, applying the update from WindowsUpdate worked, and I'm now
running Vista Ultimate SP1.
