Check with your ISP that you have the correct settings for the outgoing
(SMTP) server port (Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced).

Disable your antivirus software and try it again. Also try the compact and
repair buttons first.

I did disable the antivirus sotware.. it did not work. and I had tried all
other buttons including compact and repair as well as clean files. all other
buttons work the clear outbox button is still giving me the same error
message..
I was on the phone with gateway for 2 hours last night and got nowhere.
They did have me go into task manager and end program on winmail.exe. It did
not help. They could not help me.. neither could microsoft... they did not
want to talk to me since my software was pre-installed at gateway. Best buys
"geek squad" also tried.. but had no idea how to fix the problem. So.. I
have a brand new computer that I cannot use .. I am very frustrated. Any
other ideas? please let me know

PLEASE HELP!!! I have the same problem and I'm getting extremely annoyed. I
sent two emails last night, one went and the other went to the Outbox and
that's where it stayed. From then on I haven't been able to send any emails,
they all go straight to my Outbox.

Thank you

Outgoing email goes to the Outbox first and then should go to
your email provider's outgoing email server.

Download and install this fix with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version,
try the 32-bit version first.

Although it's labelled as being for messages stuck in the Outbox, it also
works on other folders.

If you have certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those
from Norton or McAfee, the problem is likely to come back, although
seldom immediately, in which case installing the same fix again often
helps.

Try going into TOOLs - OPTIONS and see if you have all the settings entered
correctly

Try downloading and installing this fix, without Windows Mail running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for messages stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the
64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first.

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of the common ones
cause various problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

After installing that and deleting what's in the Outbox you should be able
to send again until your anti-virus screws it up again.

You may need to delete at least the oldest message in your Outbox, or move
it to your Drafts folder. If any of them won't move or delete, download and
install this fix with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for messages stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the
64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common antivirus
programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee, or a recent one
from Trend, tend to cause such problems, although seldom immediately,
so if you have such a program, remember where to find the fix - you are
likely to need it again.

Thank you so much. This is the second time this has happened and I believe
you've helped me both times. Your program is safe, right? I hope so; I
downloaded it without thinking of the risks!

Its safe. It won't email me your bank account info or anything like that.
Some people still write software that fixes, rather than messes up one's
computer.
