OKay, have narrowed the problem down to me not being able
to access my host computer. I am the admin on it but
network is still not up because I cannot self ping! host
can ping client, client can self ping, client cannot ping
host and host cannot self ping. Have disabled Norton
internet security (don't know how long I want that to be
that way) and have disabled the network firewall option
on my dial up options (yes, I am on a dial up modem).
Are there any other firewalls I should look out for? Why
can I not access my own computer!!??
Thanks, Rach

Is your computer set to active
From a DOS prompt typ
"net user guest" without the quotes of cours
hit enter and look for a line that says the net user guest is set to active yes or no
If n
type
net user guest /active:ye
this should solve your problem.

Hi,

Have you checked to see if the Windows Firewall is disabled? Go into the
properties of your network card, and then click on the advanced tab, and see
if the windows firewall is enabled.
Have you tried pinging your own computer by testing 127.0.0.1 ?

Nope...nada. Active was set to yes...this does not
correct my problem :(((((
any more ideas please!
THanks, Rach

Thanks for posting but pinging myself (with the adress
you posted) times out. In the advanced tab of my network
card, Windows firewall is not listed.
any other ideas?

Hi,

If you're unable to ping yourself at 127.0.0.1 then there's an issue with
your networking.
Have you tried uninstalling the network card and then reinstalling it?
You don't have to physically uninstall the network card just uninstall the
drivers from Device Manager and then restart the computer and let it
reinstall the drivers all over again. Once this is done try reconfiguring
your network settings again.

I get what you're saying and have contemplated it. My
Network card is onboard and I did not really want to go
there just yet. Especially since the Host CAN ping the
client! THis means that the network is working...just
that I cannot get access to MY computer. THis is really
frustrating....The connection icon (two computers) also
lites up when both PCs are running. Am convinced that
there is communication ability between the two...just no
access from the host somewhere is MS. Tried phoning
Microsoft but they want to charge me because it is an OEM
product. CAlled the shop I got it from but they don't
know Microsoft more than I do...frankly, I wouldn't have
thought they would (they know enough and more than
average) but this clearly beats the odds....please help
me!!!!!

Your antivirus or antispyware application may have damaged
the IP stack. Search the internet for a free program
called "WinSockFix", run it and your stack will behave as
new. You may have to configure the IP settings if
necessary.
Good Luck!

THis is wierder and wierder all the time.
I have installed and ran WinSockFix and released the IP
adresses (this is something that I could not do before
the winsockfix fm the command prompt...access was not
authorized) So, I thought it was a good thing. Have
since rebootedboth PCs and ran network wizard again.
Still same proplem!
I still am timing out on self ping and can still ping
client.
AHHHHHHH!!!!!
