Sticky USB Mouse trouble

OS - Windows 2000, Hardware Dell Dimension Computer, hdd Maxtor 5TO40H4.
I have a Logitec optical mouse purchased over 7 months ago, and until
now, I've never had a problem with it. The last few days the mouse has
started to give trouble, with the cursor sticking on the screen for a
few seconds, when the mouse is moved. This problem normally starts after
several minutes of computer use. Eventually the mouse gives up
altogether and the red light underneath goes out. The only way to
restart the mouse is to pull it out of the USB socket and then push the
plug back in again. After a few minutes, the same trouble begins again.

I've looked at device manager under mouse and usb bus controller, but no
sign of any conflicts shown there. I downloaded software called UPH
Clean-Setup.msi from Microsoft's website, which fixed another
unconnected problem I was having. But more or less the mouse trouble
started after downloading this. It might be a co-incidence.

Anyone have other idea?

It wont be that, that will stop it working at all.

Bet it isnt if it really did start after using it. If you did
a full backup before using it you could restore that.

You could use a restore point if you were using XP.

You could try a repair install of 2K.
Anyone have other idea?

Try it on a different system to see if you get the same
effect on that. If you do, use the mouse warranty.

If you dont, the problem is with the OS install most likely.

I've a full back up of the system state on another drive. The only minor
drawback is that it dates back a couple of months, and I've downloaded
new software since then. Also it would mean that Windows update would
start all over again its download of various patches, but I have
considered this action if nothing else can uncover the problem.

Are you using Total Uninstall 2? You should be.

Here in the UK we often mention 'Friday afternoon products' maybe you got
one of those. Replace the mouse. I have used the same mouse for a couple of
years with no problems.

At first it seemed that it could be caused by some device driver
conflict, but that has proven negative so far. I booted up on the other
hdd in my PC, which just has the os on it and some backup data, but no
updates to the os like with my main hdd. Same mouse problem.

I've also noticed if I pull the mouse lead to the left it temporarily
eases the mouse freeze problem. But sooner or later the mouse freezes up
completely until I reboot. It sort of suggests that the problem may lie
with the mouse, but I'll wait until I find another PC to try it out on.
