Whenever my PC is shut down there is occassionally an Alert/Error message
that flashes in the blink of an eye about some program not shutting down
properly. It doesn't happen everytime and when it does if flashes so
quickly that I can't determing what it is.

Is there some way to step through the shutdown of Windows in order to
determine and isolate this problem?

Thanks.

No there is no "step" through shutdown utility. One thing you can do is
alternate ending processes one at a time through task manager and then
shut down to see which one is hanging up.

Hi
Look in the event log in administrative tools

Rock,

Thanks for the suggestion. As the issue only occurs intermitently, I am
afraid the haystack is too large and the needle to small. I will keep this
in mind if the issue becomes consistent.

Yes intermittents are hard to diagnose, and since it doesn't actually
hang the problem is relatively minor.

Not really an issue. It's just one of the perhaps, 20 or so background
apps you TOLD to run when windows loads. Use msconfig to find the one
that is causing your niggle.
