staying connected to msn and bad lagging problems in chat room

I'm have dsl and im on a network my and my sisters msn messanger keeps
disconnecting then reconnecting and when i go into a chat room i get lag so
bad that i eventualy get booted out what is causing this problem?

I would check the phone line for static.
