This is a continuation of the "Stay Offline" or "Connect" issue I've been
having nearly continuously since before Christmas. IT's even worse than it
was before. My most recent post was done several days ago and it was too far
down on the troubleshooting totem pole of the IE6-Outlook page for it to be
seen to I've started a new one. Please continue to read and help me get rid
of this thing.

Okay it was gone for all of a day and a half and now it's back! I cannot
believe this thing! I've gotten the Ad-Aware, set it up to catch anything
that moves wrong, set up the Spybot to catch any pests that try to get
through and there's nothing stopping it now. It's still here! I don't know
what's going on, but it's really bad when we first log into our individual
accounts on the main XP login page. It pops up worse than ever by coming up
at least twice before it gets the message. It still comes up later on while
we're doing anything whether it's on- or off-line.

I've dumped all but the most recent restore points after cleaning up behind
us when we're online. Doesn't help. If it's worse when we first get into our
accounts, it's coming from within IE while it's trying to go through the
startup programs. There's something wrong with IE. I've taken it out, then
had to put it back in because a necessary web site may be needed and isn't
available with any other browser.( Many are still set up that way.) I think
it may be that taking it out the first time was what started this problem.
Is there some way to restore/repair some of the updates or Hotfixes that were
added in after IE was installed? There's definitely something wrong with
IE. Any theories?

Here's the problem - you are using the web interface to these Usenet
newsgroups so you think there is a "page". None of the regular helpers
use the web interface; we use real newsreaders which have no problem
keeping a thread in view. So now you've completely orphaned your
problem from any previous replies and details and we have no idea what
has been done. I'll give you information on how to use these newsgroups
more effectively at the end of my post.

In the meantime, since you have been experiencing difficulties since
Christmas, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local version of BigStoreUSA). There are limitations to how much
help people only reading about your situation can give; someone who can
actually *see* the machine may be able to diagnose the problems very
quickly. If you have malware - which is what it sounds like - you
probably have some that requires quite a bit of skill and knowledge to
remove. You can look at the information at my site here, but I really
think you should just take the machine to a pro.

Here is information about using the newsgroups better -

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are

I went back to your site again and went to a few other links listed there.

Part 1
Download Adware-Virtumundo Removal Tool v1.5 -
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe
Information on the Adware-Virtumundo Removal Tool -

Part 2
Download David's WinFixerFix.exe -
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/WinFixerFix.exe

Those listed above I found to be the most informative and they cleared up
the trouble. If only ....oh well. Thank you for having such a helpful and
informative site. I haven't had any trouble since I used those links I
indicated. Everything's fine now! I had no idea that Winfixer had gotten
in so deep into my system, but now that it's been cleared out, will it come
back? I've put blockers on it.

WinFixer and the like - SpyAxe, SpyFalcon and other scumware - are
"rogue" antispyware programs; i.e., programs that pretend to be helpful
but are really Evil. Here's a great site by MVP and security expert
Eric Howes which will help you identify these rogues:
