I didn't know what to call this. I right clicked the address bar to paste the
newsgroup website and selected paste and that grey box with "paste" in it is
still there. Another time I right clicked the avast icon to start a scan and
the grey box with "start avast" stayed till I rebooted. I had a virus awhile
back that was auto opening pages in firefox and I uninstalled firefox, ran
scans and went back to a restore point before finally getting rid of it. This
started happening then and I can't find out how to fix it. Any ideas? Many
thanks for looking.

No, it's still there even after you log off, on top of the list of users
screen.

Here are a couple of things I would try:

1. Try lowering graphics hardware acceleration slide. You can lower
graphics hardware acceleration in Display Properties, Settings tab,
Advanced button, Troubleshooting tab. If this helps, you probably need
a different graphics card or drivers.

2. Burn BitDefender, or another program listed at the link below, to a
CD (using a working machine) and test the infected machine with it.
BitDefender also has a Rootkit checker on the Linux Desktop; run it if
you think that's the problem:

Download the executable rather than the .iso image, if one is
available.. it prompts you to insert a CD and burns the file, no problem.

Then run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation

SuperAntispyware
