Status Code 128 Restarts

T

Tom

I have a Win 2000 that during startup I get the message

The system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost.
This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

The system process C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SERVICES.EXE
terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. The system
will shut down and restart.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 318447 says to
restart in safe mode and modify the registry Share
definitions, But when the system gets to safe mode there
is no mouse or keyboard activity available. I have
scanned for viruses and it's clean. Microsoft says that
it need service pack 3 or better, but I can't get to any
point which would allow me to install it.

Anyone else seen this

Thanks

I got the same error but under a different file...the
lssas file. I was told it was the sasser virus. Luckily
my computer always gave me a few minutes before that
message came up and I was able to download the service
pack from windows and it has gone away now.....

There is supposed to be another fix that is a small
download on the windows 2000 website...it should let you
download and run it in less than a minute (if you have
high speed internet)

I have not seen that, but at the point you are at it might make sense to try an in
place upgrade install of Windows 2000. See the link below for more details on that
procedure of which you can boot from the cdrom to initiate the install and select the
repair option after the Users Agreement. If successful, you will need to first
install your service pack and then critical updates to get things up to snuff. ---
