Startup Trouble

Hi and Help,

WE accidentally removed a patch, kb891711. Now whenever we try to boot up
we get a c0000135 error stating that winsrv is not found.

We have the sony version of XP Home and only the sony recovery cd.

Is there any way to fix this problem without having to do a recovery and
lose all of our files?

Sincerely,
Maire

Can you start in Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking?

If you can get into Safe Mode, one of the workarounds is to go to add/remove
programs and remove hte TV Media adware application that's probably there.

Hi Patrick,

I tried every option offered on f8 at startup and always end up back to the
stop error. Any other thoughts?

What if I bought XP Home software and used the recovery console there to
remove sp2? Everything was fine with sp2 until the patch was removed.... I
have seen full OEM versions for under $100 and full retail versions for apx.
$150.

Also, are there any boot cd downloads that I could use to get at least a
command prompt? I have seen the disk versions but I don't have a floppy
drive, just a cd/dvd....

Yes there are, but you'll need to create the CD from another system. For
example:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

You may also need an appropriate XP CD to create the CD itself.

Yes, XP SP2 can be removed starting from the recovery console. Note that
this removal process can give you black screens and require you to edit the
registry:

Alternately, a repair install may do the same thing - assuming that the
installation files are pre-SP2. But in either case, you'll need an XP CD.
