StartUp/Shutdown Problems

This might not be the proper area to post this question , but you fine
people of this group have helped me out a number of times and have
pointed me in the right direction so i figured i'd start here.

I got a call from a friend who's running a system with Xp and lately
hasn't been able to shut his computer down. When he goes to START>
SHUTDOWN>TURN OFF (or restart) it goes right back to where he started
from. The only way he can shut it down is by the power button ,, this is
when the next weird part starts.
If he shuts it down from the pwr button and then restarts it right away
it takes hours to reboot to the point where he can use the computer. If
he shuts it down and lets it sit overnight , it reboots normally.

In another matter , though i'm not sure if it's related , his speakers
won't work anymore , just quit on him. He's not sure if he blew them or
if it's related to the above problem.

Please , any suggestions on where to start on this???

Thanks Gord

sounds suspicously like your friend is not PC literate...........?
Maybe:
1. Check for latest Windows Updates on web
2. Check for Spyware
3. Check for virus's etc.
4. What hardware is in his PC? Like has he got at least 512 k RAM
5. Has he checked the disk for errors
6. Has he defragged the disk
7. Has he checked the MSCONFIG file to see what is booting up
8. Has he run a good application to clean the Registry such as REG
CLEANER
9. Does he know how to modify the Start/Shutdown/Standby buttons on
the PC Deck from the Control Panel
10. Has he tried booting up in SAFE MODE (F8)
11. The list is endless............................you haven't provided
near enough information for much help in here!

First thing is to see what the error is that causes the reboots. Get into
System Properties (Windows + Break keys), Advanced tab, bottom "Settings"
button and uncheck "Automatically restart". Instead of rebooting, it should
stop with a BSOD; post the Stop Error and someone can help you.

If it doesn't stop with a BSOD, look in Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. See what errors occur at the time he shuts down.

thanks for the suggestions ,, i'll try these on his machine and see if
they help , he states that it just started over the last week and that
he's only installed one game and uninstalled it since the problems
started. He's also ran his virus scanner but it found nothing ,, i'll
have to try it and a spyware scanner in safe mode.

Find this post: "information about you own system" in alt.os.windows-xp by
SlAyEr and download/install the attachment (Belarc Advisor). Installing a
game may have replaced a newer system file with an old version of it. That
program might identify a problem like that. (There's no virus attached to it,
I know SlAyEr wouldn't do that and I installed it myself to be sure.)
