startup problem

Since installing XP update for Win98 on a Gateway GS-400, I have had two
problems at startup I can not solve.

1) GATEWAY APPLICATION LOADER initiates and just runs and runs and runs. 2)
I get a message which says "can not load 16-BIT Program.

The second problem I could eliminate if I knew how to identify a 16-BIT
program. The first problems can be temporarily solve with selective startup.
But I would like to know the cause.

Any suggestions?

The first problem is a Gateway issue, likely referencing a proprietary part
of their setup, you'll have to contact Gateway.

I can't tell you which program is the 16-bit program but if it requires DOS
or the use of real mode drivers, that is the likely culprit. If you have
some application or applications that are more than a few years old, it's
likely one of those. Try this, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup
screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." The report it generates
may give a clue as to the source of the issue. NOTE: this was something you
should have done before ever installing XP.
