I like to keep my startup programs very lean. Could you be
kind enough to tell me if I need to have "gcasServ" in my
startup or can I uncheck that. I see the icon on my
taskbar next to my clock. Your knowledge on this matter
would be appreciated.

A substantial part of the protection afforded by Microsoft Antispyware is
the real-time protection afforded by the agent checkpoints.

You need at least that service, and perhaps another, running, to provide
that protection.

I beleive that exe is for the real-time protection
component of MSAS. If thats not running then as you surf
the web and get hit with spyware or a browser hijack, you
will not be notified in real time. I beleive you should
still be able to pick it up on a scan after the fact.
