Me.. lol

I'm taking a course on Webpage design. And, we have to
learn about how to manage windows. And, this book is
slightly out of date, and they're telling me how to make
programs start automatically when I turn my computer on
using the StartUp folder. But, I doubt Windows XP has
that folder. And if it does, I can't find it. I've been
looking for a few hours. Any suggestions or tips would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

To see the contents of your Startup folder:
Click Start
All Programs
Startup

You can even click & drag shortcuts to it! :-)

Right click the Destop Start Icon/click "Explore"/double click "Programs"
(here you are at the "Start Menu")/If there is a "Startup" folder, you will
find it here.

The Windows XP startup folder in actually listed in two
places. The first is in the "Start" meny in any user
account. Just click on start/all programs/startup.
The other place to find it is My computer/c:/documents
and settings/(any user folder, or all users)/start
menu/programs/startup. Hope this helps. Feel free to e-
mail me with any other questions.
Mike

Hi,

Right click on it and hold down the button while
you drag it to the destination, then let go of it and
then "Create Shortcut here" from the menu. Try it! :-)

If I'm not mistaken, I ran across the instructions on
how to get there the other day and in fact i did follow
them and sure enough there is a start-up folder - Good
Luck!
* Click Start- Run
* Type MSCONFIG [press the Enter key]
* Insert the dot to Normal Startup
* Click Apply- OK (Don't restart the system)
* Right-click the [Start] button
* Left-click Open
* Double-click Programs
* Double-click Startup (Everything you see in the start
up group is actually running all the time, which just
takes away from your resources)
* Move ALL the icons in the Startup box to the desktop.
Here is how too move the icons:
* Right-click the icon [hold the button down]
* Drag the icon out of the Start Up box
* Let go on the desktop
* Left-click "Move Here")
* After you have moved all the icons onto the desktop,
close all the boxes
* Click Start- Shutdown- Restart- OK or Click Start- Turn
Off Computer- Restart
----What these instructions failed to say was after your
finished doing whatever it is you need to do in the start-
up folder you need to put it back the way it was and
restart again.

Here is the path to, I believe, the Microsoft officially recognized Startup
Programs folder or list, as intended by the designers. No jiggery-pokery
here.

[Start]>[Help and Support]>
[use Tools to view your computer information] under [Pick a task]>
(Lt.) [My Computer Information]>(Rt.) [View Adv. System Information]>
[View detailed system information (Msinfo32.exe)*]>
(Lt., click +) [System Environment] under [System Summary]>
[Startup Programs] on the expanded list

I don't have to tell you why this procedure for accessing the list is not
popular!

*This point can be reached alternatively like this:
[Start]>[Run]>type in msinfo32 >[OK]
But that runs against the Microsoft official advice -- stated in a Knowledge
Base article -- which says that, if possible, always use the Graphical User
Interface, rather than command lines.

How about looking for C:\Documents and Settings\**your user name
here**\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Drop a shortcut to the desired program in that folder - it will start up
when you log on.
If you want it to start for all users, substitute "all users" for your name.
