Startup Error

During the boot up process this message faithfully
appears:

CMOS/GPNV CHECKSUM BAD
PRESS F1 TO RUN SETUP
PRESS F2 TO LOAD DEFAULT VALUES AND CONTINUE

Pressing F2 will get windows to load. The only problem I
see is that the date and time revert to June 26, 2002
(the date the chip was programmed?)at around 12:00.

Why am I getting this error and what is the fix?

This message is telling you that your CMOS has lost it's settings. This is
almost always 99.999% of the time a bad CMOS battery. All you need to do
is replace the battery. Follow the steps below.

1. Unplug the system.

2. Open the case.

3. Find the battery and remove - battery should look like a button style
watch battery - it will be located somewhere on the motherboard - remember
it's orientation

4. Go out and buy a new battery. These types of batteries can be found at
pretty much any electronic stores. As I said these type of batteries are
also used in other electronics like camera and watches. Make sure to
remove the battery first so you know which replacement to buy. Not all
system batteries are the same.

5. Install the new battery.

6. Close Case

7. Plug system back in.

8. Start machine. The message will one again appear. This time enter you
BIOS setup (F1) and make sure to set everything correclty.

9. Turn off system and wait a few minutes. When you reboot all should be
well and the message should be gone. Mission acomplished.

Note: You can skip step 9, but I always do it just to make sure.

This is simply because the battery on the motherboard needs to be
replaced. It is usually the "coin" type and costs around $3usd. Buy a
new battery, open up your case, remove the old one, put in the new one.
Go into the BIOS and set the proper time and date, check to be sure the
data about your drives is correct (it probably will be). That's all.

This is *way* before Windows even starts to load. Something is wrong in
the hardware, which is being detected in the 'POST' (Power On System
Tests). And most hopeful guess is that the battery on the motherboard
needs replacing
