Problem - American Megatrends CMOS checksum bad . CMOS date/time notset. press f1 to run setup.

Hello,

OS: Win XP Pro (sp3)

When i switch on my PC after a gap of 2-3 days(PC not switched on for
2-3 days), a message thats displayed is "American Megatrends CMOS
checksum bad . CMOS date/time not set. press f1 to run setup. PC halts
booting win xp. Also, the system time gets reset to Sep 13th 2005. Due
to this resetting of time, some of the softwares are behaving
unexpectedly.

What exactly is creating this problem?

Your CMOS battery, inside the computer, needs replacing.

To replace the CMOS battery, unplug the electricity supply,
open the case and look on the motherboard for the CMOS
battery, usually type 2032, a circular flat battery of diam.
19 mm., usually held in place by a spring clip. We sometimes
need to disconnect some other components in order to
reach the battery, unfasten it, and insert a new one.

The battery lasts from three to ten years,
depending on your usage pattern of the computer.
A CR2032 can be purchased at most stores carrying
electronics (like a RadioShack or even a Walmart).

Very old computers (ten years or more), may have
another kind of battery. But a lot of modern computers
use the CR2032, so it is very common.

The battery assembly for the laptop, is wrapped in
plastic, to insulate it.
