XP changes dates and time

Greetings! During last few days, my computer with XP is behaving
erratically. When it starts, an error message comes up. Error 0271 - check
date and time settings. An warning message also comes up - System CMOS
Checksum bad - Default configuration used.

It also asks me to press F1 or F10. I have pressed F10 and reset the date
and time and pressed F10 again to save changes. When computer starts, the
correct date & time is shown. But if I start the computer after switching
off the computer, the same problem happens.

What I am doing wrong? With thanks in advance.

Our survey says ..... Your battery's dead. Yeah, that little
silver disk that clipped onto your motherboard. Replace it.

It sounds as if you have basic hardware trouble. This may well be no
more than the on-board battery, that retains data in the CMOS memory
when the power is off, having failed. Get it replaced as first thing.
You will then need to enter the BIOS setup at power on, and set up basic
date and time, and especially make sure that hard disks are correctly
detected. If you are not confident of doing this yourself, take it to a
good repair shop (not a chain just selling machines)
