starting a PC without the start button

I learned in my PC Troubleshooting class that you could start your PC by
touching 2 points on the motherboard with a screwdriver. I just want to know
what points they are. I can go thru the lessons and well ok, it's gotta be in
5 classes or less. I've taken 5 classes so far, and I'm on my sixth class.
I hooked up the devices to a new motherboard and the start button seems to
be not working or I hooked it up to the wrong spot.
I just want to test a Dell monitor. I bought 2 monitors yesterday at a
garage sale for 10 dollars each. The Sony Triniton VAIO CPD-100VS 15" monitor
is brand new and when I hooked it up to the Gateway Performance 800 Desktop
PC it worked like a charm. When I hooked the Dell E770 17" used monitor, that
we paid 10 bucks for, I was getting lag. I'm wondering if there is a
compatibility problem between a PC running Windows ME with a Pentium III,
Gateway and the Dell E770 monitor. I had problems before with a Dell monitor
on the same PC. That's why I want to get the Dell Dimension XPS T500 going.
Then I can hook-up the Dell monitor to the Dell PC.

That is hard to tell you which pins as all mother boards are
different. If you short out the wrong two pins you may blow the power
supply as some of the pins feed the power light and Hard disk, Check
on the mother board manual and see if you can find the power switch
pins.
