Start up

I just upgrade one xp machine runing xp home edition. A memory of 128 to 256
when i start the computer just keep on bipping sound. I know just the problem
lies on memory.. what I happened? The worst thing is when i return the
original memory it won't start up anymore same thing sound continuos sound.
I tried swapping of some memory that Im sure it working but no luck. please
help..thanks a lot..
