It sounds like you used a registry "fixer" and now you know why techs
(like me) don't recommend them. For further reading on registry
cleaners, do a Google Groups Advanced Search for "registry cleaners" in
this newsgroup, microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

Since you can't get into Windows, even if your "system tools" has an
Undo feature it doesn't help you. Try a Repair Install to fix what the
"system tools" program broke.

I read your later post where you gave more info. That should have been
included in this original post too. You installed some Norton home products
and used their registry fixer.

I would recommend you return those products. Symantec home products such as
NIS and System Works are resource heavy, and can cause problems sooner or
later. Separate from the issue of these products you don't need to run
these fix it utilities and registry cleaners. All too often we get posts in
here asking for help with problems they caused. Do not use them.

There are good alternative to NIS and Norton AV. For anti-virus there is
Avast and AVG (both free), and NOD32 which is an excellent but paid AV
program.

For firewall there is Sunbelt Software's Kerio Personal Firewall (free and
low cost), Comodo Personal Firewall (free), Zone Alarm (free and paid.

For non viral malware there is Windows Defender, Ad-Aware SE Personal,
SpyBot S&D, BHO Demon, and SpywareBlaster, all free.

I happen to use Avast and Kerio PF on one system and AVG with Comodo on
another, just for kicks. The both work well.
