I upgraded my anti virus to internet protection2007 {norton} and added their
system works package..i ran virus scan...all ok...i ran a scan with "check
it" and it found some redgister errors...i clicked "ok" to fix all...since
that time...when i try to boot up...i can only get to {almost}my desk
top..when the desk top starts to load...I am sent back to the log in
screen...if i log in again it repeats.
I tried to boot to the safe mode..and get the same results...the loop....I
also tried the option on the advanced page...start with the last known good
config..same deal.I think I need to reload windows but I can't get in enough
to start..
thank you..

Have you tried entering the BIOS (press DEL) as soon as start up begins. Then
scan through menus till you find boot device. Change that to your cd drive.
Then restart with your windows disc in drive. hopefully this should work
(well it worked for me...i had same problem). If it does work, remember to go
back inot the BIOS after Windows has reloaded and change boot device back to
your hard drive.

Hope this heps

<grumble> Almost all of the Win computers that I've had to fix for others
is because of Symantec's bullshit. Fixing Symantec's bullshit means
uninstalling it, completely sanitation from it, and installing other
(usually, free) alternatives.

Yep, Symantec ****ed up your computer and ****ed it up good. Nobody here is
going to know what was deleted from your registry. Don't use these "tools"
to "fix" your registry. If you ever need/desire to clean up your registry,
do it all by hand.

Symantec isn't going to give you support either. They are just going to
tell you to re-install Win. They got your money and don't give a **** now.
By the way, the number of "licenses" available by Symantec are per
installation, not computer. Once you use them up, too bad. Symantec's
reply that activations were wasted by having to re-install, "**** you. Give
us money."

But, you will probably buy Norton 2008 and be with a similiar problem next
year. The year after, it will be the same with 2009. Then, 2010..

</grumble>

Ok. I'll try to actually be helpful. What provisions does Norton give you
for "rescue" these days? I know you didn't make a "rescue floppy" (don't
worry, it wouldn't have worked if you did since it is Symantec), but is the
Norton CD bootable? Does it have any provisions available when you boot
from it? Probably not. Probably going to have to do a WinXP rescue restore
and hope for the best that not too much gets broken...

Ok, that was probably too painfully blunt, so I'll try better...

Another thing you can try is to boot into WinXP's recovery console so you
can get to a command prompt.

From there, you should be able to copy a backup of the registry back as the
working reg.

I don't remember exactly what file(s) need to be deleted/copied, but have
done it before. I'm lazy so you are going to have to do some of the leg
work yourself.

Try Microsoft's Knowledge Base with search terms like: WinXP registry
recover

thank you for your help...and now the rest of the story...I tried to do the
"repair install" from a new XP home spk 2 CD the install went fine..The
detailes that were provided by you folks were spot on...but the problem was
still there..so I had to do a full new install...the laptop lives and I will
choose my anti virus with caution..and I have learned my lesson about auto
fixers...again,,,Thank You very much
