Start up problems

Others have simular problems but so far the answers have not solved my
problems. Just a few days ago it started, it stops during start up at the
"Checking IDE Drives" bit for 45-60 seconds, then goes thru the temps and
amps ok but stops again on the Windows XP screen, the screen darkens just a
bit and the NUMLOCK light on the keyboard comes on, it stops for approx. 2
min and 45 seconds and when it moves on it takes 15-20 seconds to go thru the
dots across the screen then it finially gets to normal !
Some people say it starts so dont worry about it but normally it zipped
right thru all the screens within a few seconds now this ! I cant think of
any new programs I've downloaded lately and not sure if MS has put in any
updates or not!
So any help would be nice, I really dont want to have to do a complete
refresh/install.

Thanks !

Things that slow windows loading, malware, virus, new service pack and others.
check msconfig and see what's loading at start up.

I ran PCPitstop, Trend Housecall and my Avast...all showed no viruses or
malware problems. MSCONFIG shows only ashDisp, NvCpl and ctfmon being checked
so that should not be a problem. I also ran CA Yahoo Anti-spy and it came up
with only minor stuff that after I deleted it still did not fix the problem !

Next idea ???????????

Are you getting any errors or warnings in the event log?

you might try booting in safe modes
and see if the system performance is
better.

if so, then at least half of the possible
problems are eliminated.

I have unplugged most of my USB stuff and the USB Hub....no change !

I'm not sure how these could change the start up because the slow down
starts way before the programs start to load...............I think ! And I
have not tryed to start in safe mode as I cant remember how to do that !

Have to add that I got it to load in SAFE, the only difference is that
instead of stopping at the WINDOWS XP screen it stopped with a long list of
drivers etc......but still took way to long !

I'm starting to think this is going to take a new install because it happens
at start up befor the programs start....right ?

You can start in safe mode of boot up by pressing F8 key. If that brings up
a boot menu, press F8 again and you should see the options for Normal, Safe
Mode, etc.
Next time you're in Normal mode, look at device manager and see if there are
any red or yellow icons, and what devices they are for.

Safe mode showed no help, just stayed on screen of drivers ect instead of
windows xp screen. The device manager showed all good, no red or yellow marks
at all.
Guess I should add, 2.30 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, XP home sp3,
4g memory, 400 G hard drive, Virus checker up to date as is all the updates
and hotfixes. Everything looks good except the close to 4.5 minutes it takes
to start up, and this just started a few days ago ! The last hotfix update
was on 9/25 to Power Point Viewer and I cant see where that could change the
startup.

Try doing a "clean boot" and see if that helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

You might want to download and run Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware along
with your antivirus. Make sure the definitions to all products are up to
date.

Also, after all this is fixed, download and install the User Profile Hive
Cleaner from MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837115

It'll clean up any registry shutdown errors that may cause a slight delay in
startup. But mostly it's for slow shutdowns. Read the KB and decide for
yourself.

(set to master) that I had laying around......and turned it on all is working
perfect ! Loads real quick again and I ran all the checkers and came up

Strange that ADDING something would make it work, but hey, if it does,
that's great!
