Start up Problems.. Won't Log on.. HELP!!

Alright.. I have an AMD 700MHZ ol' buddy running Windows XP Proffessional build 2600. Downloaded the McAfee subscription virus scan and spyware removal crap. loaded it up then scanned the drive.. found some stuff.. quarantined it... restarted the computer. It gets to the log on screen [click name to log on.. enter password] but when I try and log on.. even with the administrator password... it starts to load the desktop and I can see the background but them it just closes out and logs back off after saving settings... I can do this over and over again but it never actually finishes logging on. The computer will NOT start in safe mode... does the same thing.. or any other mode for that matter... HELP! I have an enormous amount of important stuff on the computer... I don't have a Full Windows XP disc... just the upgrade disc and that won't run from DOS so I can't even just reinstall the surface operating system files.... I cannot reformat..... this will kill me.... help someone.......

I have seen this problem before at work, it not a good one. There are a few
options you can choose from.
1. Get a full version of XP CD and try running a repair to correct the
problem. I have seen this option work and other times not work.
2. Buy a new hard drive and slave your old drive after reinstalling your OS
to copy over your data. Being that you have an upgrade CD you will have to
load your previous OS and then UPGRADE to XP. Then I would hook up your old
drve after XP has been installed on the new drive.

These are the only things I have done to try and fix this type of problem.
