What does "crashed over the weekend" actually entail? Did the computer
just shut down? Please describe what happened in more detail. Also give
some information about your computer's hardware. Here is a link which
will show you what details to include in your next post:

Right now I would guess that your computer has some sort of hardware
failure, but there really is no way for me to know. It could just as
easily be a corrupted Windows installation (software). More information
from you will allow you to get focused troubleshooting suggestions.

The computer just locked up. I not sure if the kids were messing with it or
not. I pushed the off button for a couple of seconds. when I tried to restart
it the computer tried to start. It went to the black windows xp screen after
that it restarted. The screen with the start up options came up I tried all
of them and all of them did the same thing.

I have a HP pavilion 554e. I have not added any software to it in the last
month or so

Since this is an older computer, I would look to failing hardware first.
A good way to test if Windows or hardware is the problem is to boot
with a rescue cd such as Knoppix or a Bart's PE. If the computer has
difficulties with that, then you know for sure this is a hardware
problem.

Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

If hardware tests come back OK, you will probably need to do a factory
restore. Press F10 as the computer is starting up. This will return
your computer to factory condition, which means all your stuff will be
gone. Hopefully you backed it up. If not, there are ways to get it
outside of Windows if the hard drive is good.
