Start up has Become Very Slow ?

I turn on the computer and it goes through its "normal thing", but it is
taking much
longer to get through the "normal things". I want to get online fast and not
have to
wait about two minutes. Recent programs installed are Picasa2, Google Earth,
and
Windows Defender. A number of months ago I installed AOL Spyware Protection.
It seems start up has slowly, over a period of time, been taking longer,
even before
I installed these programs. I have owned this computer since Feb. 2003. I
have dial up, please don't tell me to get cable, I cannot afford it. What can
I do to
"streamline start-up" and get online fast..................Thank you very much
