Start up hangs at Welcome screen

What is the normal time for the computer to stay at the Welcome Screen? Mine
hangs there for about 35 seconds before going to the Desktop. My msconfig is
clean except for 5 items which are my mouse and background running programs.
I have no Spyware or viruses. I have even unchecked all of my msconfig items
as a test and it didn't make a difference. I use AVG Free Anti-Virus, Zone
Alarm, Spybot, AVG Spyware and AdaWare. I have shutdown my modem(DSL),
shutdown all my virus and spyware programs and any other background running
program and still nothing. I used CCleaner and defraged with Diskeeper. Any
other suggestions?

I don't see anything wrong with 35 seconds before going to the desktop.
Stop making yourself crazy over nothing and go back to enjoying your
computer.

You don't give your computer specifications, but I'd say that 35 seconds
is in the ball park. I have four computers and they run anywhere
between 20 seconds and 45 seconds. If I forget and leave a CD in a
drive then the startup time lengthens as the system reads the CD and
tries to figure out what it is.

You also don't say whether or not you have to enter a username and/or
password. This can extend the time needed to completely display your
desktop.

I have encountered a similar situation. Dell 6400/XPSP2/2GB. On Friday, all
was normal. I shutdown after a long day of use, then booted up at home two
hours later. The boot time went from <1min to <15min. The entire boot
process is lethargic, including BIOS load & XP startup. Login takes >12min.
Hardware diagonistics report no errors. No software was installed. Norton
AV always up and current. Had an unexplained blue screen but did not capture
output. CHKDSK recovered files, on two different occasions. After XP
boots, it is extremely lethargic. Filemon does not show any unusual file
activity. Turned indexing off. Dell support is worthless. I will try
repairing/restoring XP, but don't have high hopes. Suspect motherboard, CPU,
and/or HDD controller problem, but it really could be anything. I am
focusing on hardware because the BIOS and initial XP loading is very slow, so
I don't think it is software/OS related, but...
