Windows XP doesn't shut down

I have been trying to resolve this for a while now. I have a Windows XP
SP2 box that refuses to shut down.

I use Start -> Shut down and nothing seems to happen. It's like the OS
has completely ignored the shutdown message

I have tried using shutdown.exe from the cmd line - same issue.

I have tried using msconfig to load limited services, and I still get
the same problem.

The only way I can get a clean shutdown is to start in safe mode.

The box is fully patched, I have cleaned any spyware with AdAware and
Spybot, and it is running AVG anti-virus.

I don't recall any particular installation that triggered this issue.

I really don't want to reinstall, esp as I then have to deal with
Office 2003 reactivation,

Any help appreciated,
Thanks

run msconfig and stop programs/apps from loading one at a time till you find
the culprit.

you don't have any desktop search apps installed do you like Google or
msoft's?

I'd start with the avg anti-virus or any other 'heavyweights' that might be
starting up....

hope that helps...

I'm no computer wiz but I recently had the same problem and solved it. My
computer wouldn't shut down or restart.

Have you ever had McAfee software in your computer???

I haven't had McAfee on my PC, but I do use AVG.
I'm not using desktop search either.
I'll try the selective loading of apps using msconfig suggested by
Michael above and let you kno whow it goes.

I managed to fix the problem in rather a roundabout way. Turns out my
stepson, who logs in as a different user, has no problems shutting
down. Weird because he installs most of the software.

So my brute force solution was to delete my account and create a new
one.
