start up failure with new cdr/rw driver

My samsung internal sw-208f cd r/rw wasn't reading my blank discs to record
to with XP, so rather than try a different program, I tried to install a new
driver for it (unsigned). Now when the system starts, it immediately hangs
up and stalls. If I disconnect it internally, the system starts fine, but I
am unable to troubleshoot it since it no longer exists to the computer. I
tried system restore to an earlier date but it still hangs up.

I have a HP9800 with the affected cd r/rw as the master with an internal DVD
rom (no problems) as the slave, along with an A drive (no problems). thanks
for any advice and help

I'd start the system in safe mode with the CD Drives disconnected, uninstall
the offending driver, and reboot.
If things look good, then shutdown and reconnect the SW208. Reboot, and
reinstall the correct driver, if windows does not provie one.

Chuck, thanks for your help. The only problem is that without it connected,
I cannot tell which driver it is. As that the system starts up fine with the
sw-208f disconnected, I am not sure of the benefit of being in safe mode. Is
there a way of starting up the pc without the master cdr/rw being turned on
so that I can then diagnose the problem?
