CD - RW Drive Detect's CD-R'S but not RW'S

My Sony CD-RW CRX160E Drive only recognizes and burn's CD-R's, If I slide
in a cd-rw I dont hear the mechanism cranking up like with CD-R's and If I
attempt to burn a cd-rw I get a Message telling me to please insert a disk in
the drive even though I just inserted one.

Here's some step's Ive already taken to try and work through this all to no
avail'

1} Went into Services and made absolutly sure my IMAPI CD Burning service
was both started and in Automatic as well to be safe.

2} Went to my CD-RW Drives properties in my computer by way of right
clicking and selecting the recording tab, then turning down the write speed
until I finally went as low as would go to speed 1, To see if for some reason
my drive isnt recognizing RW's at the normal or higher speed's.

3}Went to Device Manager just to make sure my CD-RW Drive is listed as
having no problem's, After that while still in Device Manager I checked on
both the Primary and secondary IDE Channel's taking that advice from an
online forum about this subject, In the advanced setting's tab of Primary
IDE, Device - 0's Device Type listing is grayed out and set to Auto
Detection, DMA if Available, Current transfere mode - 6, Device 1 read's Auto
Detect also enabled with DMA if Available, C Transfere Mode- Not applicable,
The Secondary IDE Channel's setting's read like Thisin Advanced setting's,
Device -0 Type grayed out in the Auto Detection Setting, With DMA if
available and a current transfere of Ultra DMA Mode 2, Device 1 is also
grayed out on the Auto Detection setting, With DMA if Available selected and
a current transfere mode of Ultra DMA MODE 2, Should the fact that Some of
the setting's in the two IDE Channel's are grayed out be cause for concern?

4} after the looking around in Device Manager my next step was to install
Nero Smart Burn which I want to use anyway and also wondered if just by some
chance my problem might be totally related to something in my XP system and
therefore a third part program like Nero might have it's own necessary
driver's to burn CD-RW's, Needless to say that didnt do the trick either.

5}Lastly I went to Device Manager and simply removed my CD-RW Drive and
reinstalled it with my XP-SP2 Native driver software like it was before.

Something else that I feel might be worth mentioning is that my putter was
originally a Window's ME System which I had upgraded to XP-SP2 via the my XP
Disk disk.

From the step's I took so far can anyone here help me out with what might be
going on, Or advise me to some other step's I might want to take?
Thank's in advance to anyone who respond's.

Perhaps the drive is just worn out. RW uses a different wavelength of light
to do its work. Thus being able to access all of those other formats
doesn't prove much.
The symptom of such behavior is that the drive believes it has no media when
in fact it does.

And the driver will happily report all is well when this condition exists.

One further thought.. Perhaps the laser lens is dirty. You should try one
of the lens cleaning disks before giving up.

yeh, you may be able to read/write cd-r but not cd-rw's.

Check out the parent website to the cd drive and do some research. It's
possible that it's not designed for cd-rw's or something.... It's possible
that it's run of those devices that are not winxp compatiable eventhough
they worked on prior editions of windows.

I remember throwing away a scanner because I upgraded to win me. Later I
threw away a semi expensive zerox multifunction printer when I upgraded to
win xp..... So I wouldn't be surprised of your findings....

Thank's to everyone who responded for your input, I ran a cleaner disk
through the drive since my original post as suggested,, no luck there
unfortunately, Also Im looking through the Sony's website support info for
their CD Rw's as was suggested. And other places an interet search bring's up
in reference to Sony's drives in relation to XP.

Hopefully I'll find the info I need at Sony's driver page's, Ive found
several more suggestion's I want to take there and at a few other support
sight's before I draw the conclusion a new CD-RW Drive will be needed if I
wish to burn CD RW'S.
