Start up and Ghost 9

R

Richard Urban

You realize that you don't have to do this unless you have problems.

I have installed Ghost 9.0 on about 8-10 different computers now - all of
them running SP2. I have not encountered any problems as of yet with my
clients machines. Ghost works fine on each computer as installed, without
any modifications or fixes.

There is a Ghost 9.0 update available. I installed the update on all
machines also. Don't know if this contains a fix. The Ghost version after
the update has been installed is ver 9.0.2.3981

Hope this helps!

I modifyed the Data Execution Prenvention policy (per Symantec
document
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...rc=hot&prod=Norton Ghost&ver=9.0&csm=no&tpre=)
so Ghost 9 could work under SP2. Now during startup, just after the
Power On Self Test, I get a window that asks to choose between
Windows and OPTOUT. How can I get rid of this new extra step in
startup?

Assuming you aren't dual booting you should only have ONE line under
[operating systems]

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=OPTOUT /fastdetect

Everything under [operating systems] should be one line, though it is
probably line wrap in this post.

Everything before "Microsoft Windows XP Professional", leave as it is.
Just add the /noexecute=OPTOUT after that.

Delete the line /noexecute=OPTOUT if you create a second line under
[operating systems].

OH-OH
I got back into notepad under Safemode and tried deleting "noexecute=optout"
on the secoond line (there are two noexecute=optout commands). When I try to
save I get the "Cannot creat the c:Boot.ini file". When I press OK it sends
me to the "Save As" popup.
Now what?
Also are upper and lower case required in the noexecute line?

Thanks for helping...

Right click on the boot.ini file and select properties, then uncheck
Read-only.

Thank you Kurt...that took care of that problem!!

Glad you got your problem taken care of. But now that you have, I'd
find a way to complain to Symantec about their crappy instructions about
editing the boot.ini file. Not that I explained it all that well
either, but I read their instructions, and all you did was follow them.
They had you create the new line, which was unneccessary, when what you
needed to do was edit the existing line under [operation systems]. I
would have done the same thing as you, had I followed their
instructions, and didn't know much about the boot.ini file beforehand.
Happy Computing!
