Start up and assorted problems that may be linked.

When the computer starts up and I get to the log in screen, Ihave to log in
right away or I get no response from the computer. The hard drive light will
do a single flash every three seconds. I have to hit the reset button in
order to start over. Also, I noticed that when I try to defrag the hard
drive, it will allow me to analize the drive(s), but it will lock up when I
go to defrag them. It does the same loop with the hard drive light at this
time and it usually doesn't happen again on most of my other programs.

Ant ideas about what might be causing your problems? Any changes to
software or hardware, changes to configuration settings?

See any error messages? Any information in Event Monitor?

The symptoms you are describing could have hundreds of causes. Without
more details from you - we don't even know what version of Windows XP
you have - it's anybody's guess. My guess is: malware infection.
