Start Menu Problem

Can anybody help me before I decide to reformat my hard drive on my new XP
(Home SP2) system. I've done something to the Start menu and it isn't
working right. I'm using the default (XP) Start menu.
I dragged some Excel files and a folder, My Music (what a dummy - it's
already on the right hand side of the start menu) into the Start menu on the
top left to use them as shortcuts. Everything worked fine. Then I made lots
of changes in My Documents moving files and folders around. The shortcuts in
the Start menu didn't work anymore, presumably because those files weren't
in the same place anymore. I tried to delete the shortcuts from the Start
menu. I right clicked on them and selected "Remove From This List". They
don't go away. When I right click on them I don't get the option to "unpin"
them, but only to remove them from the list. I can't get rid of these
shortcuts from my Start menu.
I restored the files to their original locations and now these shortcuts
work again to open the files, but I still want to remove
them from the list so I can shuffle things around in My Documents and then
make my shortcuts. But they refuse to be removed from the list.
In Advanced System Information I find the following message for every time I
have tried to remove the shortcuts: "The Application Management service
terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be
found." I think this refers to trying to remove the shortcuts from the list.
I've tried a zillion times and I see a zillion repeats of this message.
Thanks
Niall

Have you tried backing up the content of your current My Documents folder to
a writable CD (if you have a CD-R/W drive), and then trying to restore your
computer to an earlier point in time before you did those things?
(Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore).

Best wishes, and Happy Holidays!
