Start menu doesn't work

I start an app, but it doesn't go into the recent apps shown in the start
menu. I thought they are a list of the recent apps. Why doesn't
it go in there? I have it set to 20 apps and there are that many
already but I'd think it would replace the least recent app there.
Any help much appreciated.

I believe that the app list on the Start menu is sorted by frequency of use, so merely starting an app once will not necessarily make it appear on the Start menu.

If you want it to appear, you could clear the list and then start the app again. To do so:
1.. R-click on Start menu.
2.. Choose Properties.
3.. Next to Start menu, click Customize.
4.. Under Programs, click Clear list.
