START MENU AND PROGRAM ICONS

Hi

I am getting bloody frustrated with the crapiness that is XP. All of a
sudden after no problems every single icon within my start menu, and every
single icon across every folder of my PC, had a shortcut created to it. I
have just spent 3 hours now, going through and deleting all of these. Now
why would this happen> Does not make any sense at all
