Just got a couple new Windows XP PCs. Out of the box, one of them (Pentium
4, 3.0 GHz with 1 Gb RAM) had the curious problem of the "Help" button (the
blue question mark from the start menu) not working. I didn't think too
much about, and installed a database program, Quicken, and a dial-up
networking connection. This morning, my office manager commented, "Isn't
this computer supposed to be faster than the old one (Windows 98, 1 GHz
Pentium w/256 Mb RAM). Turns out that the installed apps would sometimes
open very slowly. And if I clicked the task bar shortcut for dial-up
networking connection shortly after startup, it would "freeze" (i.e., the
button would apppear to be stuck in the "pressed on" position, without the
DUN connection opening) for about a minute.
Per Dell tech support, I reinstalled XP, re-activated it, ran virus scans
and hardware diagnostics (all normal), but still can't get the help button
to work, and the other stuff is still sluggish.
I'm probably just going to return this PC, but if there's a simple solution,
I'd be grateful if anyone could enlighten me with it. It's just very
mysterious to me.
Thank you,
Sean
