Standby Stopped Working; Can't Reactivate with Power Options

Hello all--

My Dell laptop stopped going into standby or hibernate when I close the lid.
Now I can't even select the options from the "Turn Off Computer" menu. I have
tried resetting the the Power Options Properties (Advanced tab) to Standby or
Hibernate "when I close the lid" or "press the power button," to no avail.

Some research I did suggests that maybe I contributed to the problem. I have
begun using the laptop on a contract gig, and may have plugged in a mouse,
USB Travel Drive, or power cord while the laptop was in standby mode. But I
couldn't find any specific remedies, only obscure references to BIOS.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to go / what to do next?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

well, there is also the
option to test the power
management in safemode.

if they work in safemode
or do not work in safemode
might provide a clue as to
whether the problem is with
the o.s. or hardware.

try this trick and see if you
get any results:

create a new shortcut on
the desktop, then copy and
paste this line:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState m2

then save the shortcut.

clicking it would normally
initiate hibernation.

see the above or the
safemode analysis helps.
