'Standby' or 'Hibernate'?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the difference between standby and hibernate
are please? (along with how to configure 'em, if possible!).

I've been using AOL Silver Broadband for nearly 3 weeks now & whenever
I come out of standby, I get a tray icon saying 'cable disconnected' &
have to wait for the modem to be retrained.

I've tried disabling power off for the root 2 usb hub but have had no
luck.

"Standby is a state in which your monitor and hard disks turn off,
so that your computer uses less power. When you want to use the
computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop
is restored exactly as you left it. Use standby to save power when
you will be away from the computer for a short time while working.
Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power
failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information."

"Hibernation is a state in which your computer shuts down to save
power but first saves everything in memory on your hard disk.
When you restart the computer, your desktop is restored exactly
as you left it. Use hibernation to save power when you will be
away from the computer for an extended time while working."

Above info copied from XP's excellent "Help and Support Center".

To solve your 'cable disconnected' issue:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
Click on the '+' next to Network Adapters, then right-click on your
Fast Ethernet Adapter device, select Properties > Power Management
and place a check next to "Allow this device to bring the computer out
of Standby", then click OK.

Can't help you with AOL. They use their own proprietary software.

For a clear and concise description of the different power states under the
current ACPI specification, see:

Thankyou very much Carey :)

I'm not using an ethernet card at the moment (keep meaning to get a
cable) so my modem is plugged straight into one of my USB ports - but
I'll give your suggestion a try and see what happens!

Actually, you don't have broadband. OFTEL/OFCOM have decreed that anything
below 512kbps cannot be described as such. Only AOHELL's Gold and Platinum
packages are true broadband.

Just like to ask you one question - was it masochism that made you choose
the world's worst ISP?! In fact, AOHELL isn't even an ISP - it's an ICP
(Internet Content Provider). You seem like a fairly intelligent man, so why
choose an ISP that treats you like a preschooler? You do realise that, if
you eventually come to your senses, and want out, you will have to threaten
legal action to do so? You will also have to have your credit card company
freeze all payments to AOHELL because they will continue to charge you for
months after you close the account.

I think you'll be needing the following instructions very soon (when you
realise the damage AOHELL has done to your system - its software modifies a
number of key Windows files).

1) Take the AOHELL CD

2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.

3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch.

4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish

5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account. Don't, however tempting it might be, let them
persuade you to stay with offers of 'free' months.

6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.

7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.

There! Problem solved.

Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.

My computer will not go into the Standby mode. When I try it it restarts
within about 20 seconds. This is a fairly recent problem as it has been
working fine. Can anybody suggest a cure?
