Standby option missing

I used to be able to switch between 'Standby' and 'Hibernate' power options
by pressing the 'Shift' key, but now the 'Standby' option is no longer there.
I did have a problem with the PC earlier with an 'NTLDR is missing' message
that took 35 mins to fix whilst talking to software support, and we had to
boot the PC from the CD Drive and do 'fixboot' etc. so it is most likely to
have been caused by all this. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Did you check in Control Panel under Power Options? Be sure you have
enabled Hibernation and APM.

No sorry, no help there. Thanks anyway. The other thing I have noticed
though, is when I 'Turn-Off' the computer, it brings up a message saying 'It
is now safe to turn off your computer', but prior to the NTLDR issue, it
didn't say anything, it just turned itself off. I wonder if they are related
issues?

I have now noticed that I don't have 'APM' in Power Options. Is this right or
should it be there?

Also, is there any other way to enter 'standby' as I have to turn the PC off
all the time now? Cheers!

Hi Pingu

If you go to Device Manager and click on the + sign next to Computer,
what does it say? Does it mention ACPI or does it say Standard PC?

Hi Nightowl.

I have both 'ACPI Uniprocessor PC' and below it 'Standard PC'. However, it
says 'no drivers are installed for this device' on the ACPI.

Hi Pingu

I think that "Standard PC" is the cause of both the problems you've been
having; no standby option and the message "It is now safe to switch off
your computer" instead of the machine turning itself off.

I'd guess that the repair you had to do has changed a setting in the
BIOS which has caused Windows not to detect your PC as ACPI-capable. The
first thing I'd suggest is to go into your BIOS and make sure any power
management options are enabled (look for settings like S3 or S4, in my
BIOS they're listed under "Suspend Mode"). If you make any changes, turn
off the PC and then reboot.

Then check under Device Manager again and see if it has installed
drivers under the ACPI PC entry. If that didn't do the trick, there is
another way described in this Knowledge Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810903
(see particularly Step 2 and Step 4, section 7). If you do this, use the
ACPI computer entry and choose the driver that *exactly* matches the
wording in Device Manager.

Do please note the warning in the article, but as your computer has been
recognized in the past as being ACPI, I think it should work for you.

Best of luck -- let us know how you get on :)
