Hi,

I run Win 2k, up to date. When I try to put my computer in
standby, I have begun to receive the error message:

"Removable Storage Manager refused the request to hibernate or
suspend the system. One or more applications have active connections open
to this
service. Close all applications that are using the service (including the
"Removable Storage" MMC snapin) before attempting to hibernate or suspend
the system."

The computer will not go into standby.

According to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 252471,
"This issue can occur for approximately 10 minutes after you
close any Removable Storage Manager (RSM) clients. The known clients are:
Windows 2000 backup (NTBackup.exe)
Removable Storage Manager MMC Snap-in
Disk Management MMC Snap-in"

and the problem can be resolved with the latest Windows 2000 Service Pack.

I, however, am not running any of the clients named, and have
installed all of the service packs for Win2k.

Even more puzzling: the problem is intermittent. Sometimes I can go into
standby without any trouble.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Hi Dan,

Do you happen to have a pen drive? If you do, to pull the pen drive you must
click on the USB symbol in the system tray. I is fine to leave it plugged in
and shutdown the machine, but not okay to take it out while you are
shutdown. They most damage is done by unplugging it w/o right or left
clicking on the icon and clicking on the "stop mass storage device...".
After clicking, it is okay to pull it.

If you don't have a pen drive or external HDD or anything like that, sorry.

Try commandline, SFC /SCANNOW
If that doesn't fix it, Inplace Upgrade will.

How to Perform an Inplace Upgrade:
