Standby Fails

If I click Start | Turn Off Computer | Shutdown | Standby, here's what
happens:

The Windows splash screen (Windows is Preparing to Stand By) appears
The screen goes dark and the hard drive stops
Then after about ten seconds, the computer awakens.

I can repeat the process several times with the same result

What could be causing the failure to stand by?

Vibrations wobbling the desk?

Check your Power options.
Start/Control Panel/Power Options/
Check your settings under Power scheme, if you make changes
click Apply and OK to set them.

If you have a dial up modem make sure its not set to bring computer out of
standby.
