Standard desktop backgrounds disappeared

I want to temporarily change my Desktop background to one of the standard
Windows XP background elements. To my surprise, the list of available
backgrounds includes a very large number of "My Pictures" image files and
most of the standard XP background elements are missing. How do I restore the
original list of background elements? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Did you try browsing for them manually?

I believe the standard elements are located in the Windows\Web\Wallpaper
folder. The problem is not just that these files are not being displayed as
background options (I could browse to them from the display properties
window). I was looking for a means of getting rid of the hundreds of choices
that somehow crept onto the list from my image folders. I haven't found a
method of removing items from the list.

Regardless, the question is now moot. The standard items are back and the
extraneous ones are gone. I didn't reboot the computer, so I'm not sure what
happened.
