"stand by" not available from "turn of computer"

I've Windows XP home. Sony vaio notebook.
When closing my computer, the machine has stopped its normal shutdown.
Also, per the subject, the "stand by" mode is is greyed out in the Start >>
Turn Off Computer option.
Please help. Thanks.

Do you have the latest XP video drivers from the manufacturer and not
Microsoft?
