stand-by and away

hello....i bought a new computer 4 wks ago.....with media center, though i
haven't activated m.c. yet....i cannot go into stand-by, just hangs and i
have to cold re-start.....i can go into away mode with sleep button and
monitor sleeps and power on light flashes...if i don't record anything am i
in stand-by mode then......is so, great...if not, how can i get it to go into
stand-by....thanks much....bob
