Stand By - computer fan stays on

Recently, Stand By mode has not been working for me. When I put my Dell
Dimension into Stand By, the system appears to go to sleep (screen black
etc.) EXCEPT now the fan won't go off.

I'm convinced this has something to do with my ATI Catalyst Control Center,
which requires .NET services, because from time to time, when i shut down, XP
shows a window that shows it ending a program called .NET broadcaster or
something that has stalled and is no longer working.

I tried uninstalling the ATI control center and reinstalling the drivers
package that doesn't use the .NET stuff, but the problem is still happening.

Any thoughts? =)

I don't think it's a hardware problem -- the issue started when I upgraded my
drivers to the latest ATI RADEON Catalyst Control Center (here:

I've since uninstalled it and reinstalled the more basic version, but still
no luck.

It's nothing to do with the video card. There are 2 alternative states
for Standby; S3 which is fan on, and STR which is fan off. You will find
the configuration for these in your CMOS menu under <Advanced> option.

S2 is the standard setting for Standby. There is nothing wrong with
letting the fan run as it uses such little juice anyway. If you set your
computer to <Hibernate> under Control Panel/Power Management, that will
also turn the fan off.
